5 major processes of using a Keurig:

Keurig coffee makers are designed to be simple to operate. There are five essential steps to take into account:

  1. Do a cleansing brew and an initial setup
  2. Brewing a beverage with K-cups
  3. Auto-on and auto-brew modes
  4. Maintenance on a regular basis
  5. Draining the internal water tank

What you will need

  • K-Cups of your preferred coffee
  • Water without the addition of milk
  • Mug with a minimum capacity of ten ounces

Initial Setup & Cleansing Brew for the first time (10 Steps)

Even if you have no experience with Keurig, you should be aware that some setup is required. What you should do is follow these steps:

1. Plug your brewer after unboxing:

Remove the parts from the adhesive tape and take the machine out of the box. Connect the Keurig coffee maker to the electrical outlet. Voila, now you’re ready to utilize your coffee machine!

Bustler’s tip: Save the instruction manual since it contains a wealth of information about how to use and maintain a certain model.

2. Lift the handle and remove the shipment disc:

Brewers who do not have a shipment disc are exempt from this procedure. Some Keurig variants include a disc in the pod attachment. Keep the disc, as well as the box and user manual that came with it. If you’re relocating your coffee maker from one location to another or selling it to someone else, the disc storage will come in handy.

3. Drain the water reservoir and rinse it with warm water:

For Keurig machines with a non-removable water reservoir, such as the K-mini series, this step is skipped. Clean the water reservoir with soap or warm water after detaching it. Remember to clean the water entry point at the water storage platform’s base.

4. Fill the charcoal water filter with water:

It is not necessary to open and install the charcoal water filter in the water filter holder right away. Instead, fill it by following these instructions:

4.1. Rinse the filter for a minute with cool water

4.2. Soak it for 5 minutes in a dish of water

4.3. Massage the water filter, if any loose charcoal particles fall into the bowl instead of your coffee

Rinse, soak, and massage are the only actions you need to take.

Bustler’s note: Brewers who do not have a charcoal water filter kit will not be able to complete this step.

5. Snap the charcoal water filter into the water reservoir:

Bustler’s note: If your Keurig doesn’t come with a charcoal water filter kit, you should skip this step.

There are two elements to the charcoal water filter: a top handle and a bottom holder. Place the charcoal water filter on the bottom part, cover it with the handle, and place it in the reservoir. Everything is going to fit together perfectly.

6. Fill the water reservoir to the “Max” line:

Filtered water should be added to the water reservoir, but not exceed the “Max” line.

7. Push the power button to start heating the water:

Allow 20 seconds to 3 minutes for the machine to heat the water. If your Keurig machine has an indicator, it will turn off; if it does not, you can simply wait until the heating sounds.

8. Place the mug on the drip tray:

To capture the water, take the cup and place it beneath the dispenser. Some types contain sensors that prevent the machine from brewing until a mug is placed on the drip tray.

9. Run a brew cycle without using a K-cup:

When brewing a cup of joe for oneself, you can utilize the coffee pods. But since this is a purifying drink, there’s no need in wasting the coffee.

10. Choose your brew size and press brew:

Select a brew size that is equal to or larger than your cup size; brewing will take 20 seconds to 3 minutes, and you are now ready to use your Keurig coffee maker on a regular basis.

Brewing a Beverage with K-Cups

Your Keurig coffee maker is ready to use daily once you’ve completed the initial setup and cleaning. Follow these instructions to make a beverage with K-cups.

1. Select your pod and place a mug:

Grab your mug and set it on the drip tray before brewing your first beverage. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of cup sizes depending on which Keurig model you have. For example, for K-Elite, a cup of 4 oz (120 ml) to a 12 oz (350 ml).

Note: There are two main brewing systems used by Keurig: Keurig 1.0 and Keurig 2.0 are two different types of Keurig coffee makers:

  • Keurig 1.0: Brews only K-cup pods, but is compatible with all K-cup pods on the market.
  • Keurig 2.0: Brews K-cups, K-mugs, and K-carafe pods to make coffee.

2. Lift the handle and place a K-Cup:

It’s pretty self-explanatory, right? To reach the K-cup holder, select the K-cup of your choice and lift the handle at the top of your machine. With the foil side up, place the pod in the holder. The Keurig device pierces both the top and bottom once the K-Cup is inserted and the handle is lowered—this is the secret of Keurig’s brewing mechanism.

3. Choose your brew preferred settings:

This parameter is highly dependent on the Keurig machine model you’re using. You can choose from the following options based on your preferences.:

  • Hot chocolate or other beverages
  • Brew size
  • The temperature of the brew
  • Iced tea or flavored coffee

4. Wait for your coffee to finish after pressing brew:

The brew buttons of Keurig machines come in many forms, including:

  • Physical button
  • Touchscreen
  • No button, brewing starts after the handle has been lowered down.

When the brewing process is complete, the Keurig will let out a loud burst of air to alert you. Your cup of joe is ready. Cheers!

How to use Auto-On & Auto-Brew Modes in Keurig

Auto-on: This is a popular feature found on many Keurig models that allows you to set the brewer to switch on automatically. It will preheat the brewer so you can start brewing immediately.

Auto-brew: Many Keurig carafe models include this feature. This Keurig model allows you to fill the brewer with water and a coffee pod ahead of time and brew it afterward.

You can use the auto-on and auto-brew modes according to the guidelines listed below:

1. Choose and insert your K-carafe:

Choose your K-carafe pod and lift the handle to place it in the pod holder, and then lower down the handle.

2. Select the brew size and brew setting:

This option differs depending on the model you’re using. Select your brew size and press auto-on or auto-brew.

3. Choose the brew time:

You’ll be taken to a screen with a digital clock and some arrows once you’ve chosen your brew setting. Choose your chosen brew time based on the strength of coffee you desire.

4. Wait:

When the brew time approaches, the coffee maker will brew the coffee according to your preferences. You won’t be able to use the coffee maker until the desired time has been canceled.

Maintenance of Keurig on a regular basis

Many people claim that their Keurig coffee machine did not last more than a year or two, although this is due to inadequate maintenance and regular cleaning. Make sure to follow the recommended maintenance procedures to keep your Keurig machine in good working order:

1. Clean all the machine components:

When you unbox the brewer, you’ll get a user manual with instructions on how to clean the components of a particular model. The following guidelines apply in general:

1.1. Drip tray: Wash it in the sink, not the dishwasher

1.2. Exterior: Wipe it down with a soft sponge

1.3. Water reservoir and cover: Rinse in the sink and wash with soap and a non-abrasive sponge

1.4. Pod assembly: Wash it in the sink

1.5. Entry and exit needle: Wash and wipe down with a soft sponge

1.6. Carafes: Wipe down with a non-abrasive sponge

Wipe out any portion of the machine that comes into contact with coffee, like the pod assembly, using a solution of water and white vinegar.

Frequency: Every 1-2 weeks

2. Replace the charcoal water filter:

Change the charcoal water filter so that you don’t end up with stale coffee. Go to step 4 of the initial setup and cleansing brew, which is detailed in-depth, to get an idea of how to alter or replace the charcoal filter. Rinse, soak, and massage are three simple procedures to remember.

Frequency: Every 2 months

3. Descale your machine:

Calcium, which comes from water, will accumulate in your coffee machine over time. This process will be slowed if you use filtered water or a charcoal water filter, but it will still happen. Almost all Keurig models contain a descaling indication that tells you when it’s time to descaling.

Follow the steps outlined below:

3.1. Fill the water reservoir halfway with the descaling solution or a vinegar-water mixture

3.2. Repeat the brew cycle once more

3.3. Allow the brewer to sit for at least 30 minutes to allow the inside components to be thoroughly cleaned

3.4. Repeat the brew cycle as needed until the water reservoir is depleted

Frequency: Every 3-6 months

Drain the internal water tank

If you’re going out of town and won’t be using your Keurig for more than a couple of weeks, you should drain the water from the internal water tank. If stored in a cool environment, this can prevent several significant issues such as mold growth and water freezing.
